Two stones to choose from: Amethyst, natural and deep purple with the pale banding amethyst does; or Opal, milky blue-white with an iridescence that shifts depending on the light.

About the Tree of Life

It's one of the older symbols people still wear — it turns up in Celtic carving, in the Norse Yggdrasil, in Kabbalah and across Buddhist and Egyptian art, usually meaning much the same thing in each: roots and branches as one system, growth that depends on what's underneath.

You don't need to hold any of that to like the look of it. But it's a nicer thing to be asked about than a plain pendant, and it's why this shape has stayed popular for as long as it has.

Amethyst or Opal?

Amethyst is the grounded one — deep purple, natural stone, reads as more everyday and goes with dark clothing. Opal is the eye-catching one — pale blue with a shifting glow that photographs beautifully and stands out against a white shirt.

Looking After It

• Keep it dry. Off before showering, swimming and bed.
• Perfume and hairspray go on first, necklace after — they dull the wire over time.
• Store it flat rather than hanging, so the cord doesn't twist.
• Wipe the stone with a soft dry cloth. A dry toothbrush gets dust out of the wire.

Is the amethyst real?
Yes — natural amethyst, which is why the purple varies from piece to piece rather than being a flat, even colour.

How long is the cord?
40 cm with a 5 cm extender, so anywhere from a short collar to sitting just below the collarbone.

Will it tarnish?
The wire is a plated finish, so keep it dry and away from perfume and it'll hold. It's a AED 39 pendant, not fine jewellery — treat it accordingly and it lasts.

Is it a good gift?
